# Difference Between Motion and Rest

Motion and rest are two basic terms in kinematics. The Basic Difference between rest and motion is that in rest body does not changes its position with respect to surroundings, while in motion body changes its position according to the observer.

## Difference between  Rest and motion in tabular form

 MOTION REST Definition If a body changes its position with respect to its surrounding it is said to be in motion. If a body does not change its position with respect to its surrounding it is said to be at rest Types Basically there are three types of motion. 1.        Translatory Motion2.       Rotatory Motion3.       Oscillatory (Vibratory) Motion There are no types of rest. Example A moving train or car, a running boy, etc. A book lying on a table.

### Types of Motion

there are many types of motion, but the  most common types are given below:

1. Translatory or linear motion
2. Rotatory motion
3. Vibratory or oscillatory motion

### Translatory or Linear Motion

linear motion is also called the translator motion. in this type of motion body moves in a straight or curved path.

Examples

• the motion of a car on a flat road. the motion of motorbike on a circular road.
• the motion of a cricket ball hit for a sixer.

### Rotatory Motion

if a body spins or rotates about a fixed point or axis, its motion is called rotatory motion.

Examples

• the rotation of the earth about its own axis.
• the wheel of a moving car.
• the blades of a moving electric fan.

### Vibratory or Oscillatory Motion

to and FRO motion of an object about a mean position executed at regular intervals of time is called vibratory motion.

Examples

• up and down movements of the block suspended by means of spring.
• to and FRO movements of a pendulum.
• the periodic swings of aa clock pendulum.
