Plant cells and Animal Cells

The Basic difference between plant cells and animal cells is that plant cells are rectangular in shape while animal cells are round in shape. Plant cells have cell walls while animal cells do not have cell walls. The chloroplast is present in plant cells while Absent in animal cells. Plant cells are larger than animal cells.

Difference between Plant and Animal cell

Plant cells

Animals cells

1. Plant cells are usually larger than animals’ cells. 1. Animal cells are usually smaller than plant cells.
2. Plant cells have a cell wall made of cellulose. 2. Animal cells have no cell walls.
3. Plant cells generally have only a thin lining of cytoplasts. 3. Animal cells consist of almost entirely of cytoplasm along with organelles.
4. Plant cells have a large central vacuole. 4. If any vacuoles are present, they are usually
5. Plant cells contain plastids especially chloroplasts. 5. Animal cells never contain plastids or chloroplasts.
6. In plant cells, centrioles are absent. 6. In animal cells, centrioles are present.
7. Plant cells do not have lysosomes. 7. Animal cells have lysosomes which are the sites of the enzymes concerned with the breakdown of large molecules.
8. Plants cells have starch granules in their cytoplasm. 8. Animal cells have glycogen granules in their cytoplasm.

Animal cell:

It has a defined nucleus and complex DNA. It is in charge of vital and essential functions for life, its nutrition, and its reproduction. This is characterized by being the smallest unit that performs all the necessary functions to maintain the proper functioning of organisms. The animal cell has a nucleus that in turn contains the nucleolus, where the ribosomes and most of the genetic material in the form of chromosomes are generated. These are some of the many functions of the animal cell:

  • Epithelial cells protect the skin and organs.
  • Bone cells support bones.
  • The cells of the immune system protect the body from disease.
  • Blood cells carry nutrients and oxygen.

Like the animal cell, it has a defined nucleus. The plant cell is part of the plant kingdom. It is autotrophic (it produces its own food). Plant cells are characterized by having chloroplasts, organelles that carry out photosynthesis, a process where the energy of the Sun is transformed into chemical energy, in order to create their own food. Similarities between plant and animal cells

  1. The nucleus is present in plant cells as well as in animal cells.
  2. Both cells have a cell membrane.
  3. Both cells have cytoplasm.
  4. Mitochondria is also present in plant and animal cells.
